Deepika Padukone News: Doing stunts is the last thing one would want to in a saree. But despite some initial hiccups and a lot of hobbling, actress Deepika Padukone managed to even do that for director Ashutosh Gowarikar’s period drama Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey.
The film is about the Chittagong Uprising in the 1930s and Deepika plays the freedom fighter Kalpana Datta who had the patriotic fervour and grit to pick up the gun to fight for the country’s freedom at a time women were excluded from the freedom movement.
Since Deepika plays a Bengali character, designer Neeta Lulla did research to know about the dressing style of the women of the 1930s. Accordingly, Deepika was given a saree which she wore in the traditional Bengali style.
All was well except when Deepika had to do her stunts and actions. While running or shooting the gun, the saree would often come in the way and the director often had to call for retakes.
A little way out of the saree tangle was for Deepika to tuck its pallu round her waist. Moreover, as Deepika got used to the saree, she became more and more at ease doing stunts in it.
